The Kentucky Youth Soccer Association Awards recognize outstanding achievements by Coaches, Players, Referees and Administrators in advancing youth soccer in the state.

Parent of the Year

Chevrolet Parent of the Year Steve Doogs Elizabethtown YSA

When it comes to achievement, there are those who brag about what they could do and those who just get the job done – Steve Doogs is the latter. A longtime mainstay of the Elizabethtown YSA, Doogs has served in any number of capacities including president, but has always been dedicated to bringing the world’s favorite game to Kentucky kids. He has been a referee at EYSA and in the high school program for years. He is still coaching, his youngest of three now, and is a strong supporter of the local high school program as well, helping out with their fundraising and administrative duties.

 

 

Doogs was also instrumental in starting the girls program in EYSA, currently comprising almost 40% of all EYSA players. According to those nominating him for this award, this was a major achievement that is just now beginning to show results. He served for a number of years as the girls’ commissioner, making their participation a priority, even insisting that the youngest girls have a chance to play.

In addition to his on-field efforts, Doogs has also played a role in the creation of the excellent EYSA website, using his computer skills to polish programs and create new methods of communication for the booming local soccer community.

Paula Skees, whose son had Doogs for his first coach, calls him patient and caring, instilling in many children over the years a true love of the game and its ability to bring groups together.

According to longtime KYSA board member Milt Koger, “Steve has been and is a parent who has made things happen. He is highly deserving to receive the Parent of the Year award for what he has done this year and over the last decade.”
